Officers contacted the victims at the residence; other officers canvassed the area and initiated a pursuit after locating the suspect vehicle at Jones Avenue and Brimmer Avenue. Morales abandoned his vehicle in the 0-100 block of Regency Boulevard and fled on foot, entering the Regency Park Apartments. Officers learned Morales was in an upstairs apartment and began knocking on the door, announcing themselves as police. Morales opened the door, and produced a firearm pointed toward officers. Officers discharged their weapons. Two officers were hit by gunfire; Officer Jonathon Woehler was shot in both legs, and Officer Justin Ortiz suffered a graze wound to the ankle. Officer Woehle was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officer Ortiz was evaluated by AMR (American Medical Response) and was released with minor injuries. While rendering aid to the suspect, officers rolled the suspect onto his side which revealed a fully-loaded firearm underneath. One officer rendered aid until rescue arrived. Morales was pronounced deceased at the scene. Interviews conducted by the 10th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) revealed that the officers' injuries resulted from gunfire originating from fellow police officers.
