Officer Opens Fire On Man Attacking Victim With Box Cutter

* (Disclaimer: The content in this video is intended for educational and informational purposes only) Portland, Oregon — On Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 4:34 p.m., Portland Police Officers were dispatched to reports of an assault with a weapon in the area of Southwest Broadway and Southwest Washington Street. As officers were en route, they received reports that the suspect, later identified as 36-year-old Eric Jonathan Hurtado, was armed with a box cutter, and he was trying to stab or cut additional people. At approximately 4:39 p.m., Officer Daniel Hall located Hurtado outside a hotel in the 400 block of Southwest Broadway. As Officer Hall exited his patrol vehicle, the suspect was actively stabbing a bystander. Officer Hall fired his PPB-issued firearm two times, striking the suspect once. The suspect fell to the ground but continued trying to stab the man he had just attacked. Officer Hall ordered everyone out of the immediate area, secured the scene, and seized Hurtado's weapon. Hurtado was provided trauma first aid at the scene before being transported to the hospital where, despite additional lifesaving measures, he was pronounced deceased. A boxcutter was recovered at the scene, and the blade for the boxcutter was located on the ground next to where a victim had been laying. Two people stabbed by Hurtado, one inside a business and a second outside the hotel, were transported to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Hurtado physically engaged two others in the area, but they did not require transport to a hospital.
