DIEGO GARCIA, British Indian Ocean Territory (Sept. 18, 2026) — Newly selected Chief Petty Officers are frocked and receive their gold fouled anchor collar devices during a Chief Petty Officer pinning ceremony onboard Navy Support Facility Diego Garcia, Sept. 18, 2026. “A Chief is an anchor, when the storms rise and the ship wants to drift, when the tide pulls hard and the deck pitches, the Chief is the weight of iron sunk deep and shifting sand. And still the Chief stands where lesser men would strand. Chiefs do not float above the problems, Chiefs dig in. That is no longer just a Sailor, that is the reason the rest of us stay anchored,” said Capt. Brett Whorley, commanding officer of NSF Diego Garcia. NSF Diego Garcia’s mission is to provide critical support to U.S. and allied forces forward deployed to the Indian Ocean, while supporting multi-theater forces operating in the CENTCOM, AFRICOM, EUCOM and PACOM areas of responsibilities in support of overseas contingency operations.
