NORFOLK, Va. (Oct. 13, 2026) - Rear Adm. Benjamin Nicholson, commander, Military Sealift Command, delivers a birthday message honoring the U.S. Navy’s 251 years of service, recognizing the generations of Mariners, Sailors, and civilians whose dedication, sacrifice, and commitment to the mission have safeguarded the nation and advanced American maritime interests around the world. Established Oct. 13, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized the purchase of two armed vessels to challenge British naval forces during the American Revolution, the U.S. Navy has grown into the world’s premier maritime fighting force, maintaining freedom of the seas, projecting power, and defending the nation’s interests at home and abroad.
