About this video
Gos Staps, attendee, discusses the significance behind the Sunset March across Nijmegen’s De Oversteek bridge Sept. 20, 2026, 82 years after American troops crossed the Waal River under German fire during Operation Market Garden. Every evening since October 2014, a military veteran has led the march as 48 pairs of lights illuminate in sequence at a walking pace, honoring the 48 Soldiers who died during the crossing on Sept. 20, 1944. Last night, today’s Soldiers joined a tradition the Dutch community carries forward every day, keeping faith with Americans who fought for their liberation. As the United States marks 250 years of independence, Operation Market Garden commemorations offer a living example of the long relationship between Americans and the Dutch. From Dutch trade and support during the American Revolution, symbolized by the First Salute at St. Eustatius in 1776, to American and Allied forces fighting together in the Netherlands in 1944, that history continues today through communities that preserve the memory of those who served and through an enduring U.S.-Dutch partnership.
