About this video

The unit, Company D, 151st Infantry Regiment, also known as the Indiana Rangers.

They trace their lineage to the frontier days of the Indiana territory, protecting citizens who flowed into the Midwest, from those early days, the Rangers have made an impact throughout the state’s and nation’s history – from the Mexican War to the Civil War to the Pacific battle campaigns of World War II.

Of the seventy-six Army National Guard units called to active duty during the Vietnam War, only eight units deployed. One unit stood out completely alone, Company D, 151st Infantry Regiment, the Indiana Rangers.

The deployment of Company D, 151st Infantry Regiment during the Vietnam War represents a landmark moment in U.S. military history. As the only National Guard ground maneuver unit to serve in Southeast Asia, their service paved the way for the modern "Total Force" integration between active duty and reserve components seen today in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Rangers earned 19 Silver Stars, 175 Bronze Stars and 19 Indiana Distinguished Service Crosses, six paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Their exceptional performance in Vietnam proved once and for all that reserve components could seamlessly integrate with active-duty forces on the front lines of combat. They carried on a proud legacy of service that lives on in the soldiers we recognize today.
