About this video
Attendees during the John R. Towle Ceremony in Oosterhout, part of Operation Market Garden 2026 Commemorations. After disabling two enemy tanks with his bazooka several hundred meters ahead of the forward lines, Pvt. Towle was killed by a German mortar while returning to attack a German half-track after retrieving additional ammunition. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. The people of Oosterhout have named a street after him, and in 2024 built the memorial that stands where the ceremony occurs. As the United States marks 250 years of independence, Operation Market Garden commemorations offer a living example of the long relationship between Americans and the Dutch. From Dutch trade and support during the American Revolution, symbolized by the First Salute at St. Eustatius in 1776, to American and Allied forces fighting together in the Netherlands in 1944, that history continues today through communities that preserve the memory of those who served and through an enduring U.S.-Dutch partnership.
