About this video

Herman Wijnhoven, the chairman of the Groesbeek Airborne Friends, reflects during the Operation Market Garden Plaque Unveiling Ceremony of the B-24 Crash of the "Rum Runner" in Kessel, Germany, Sept. 18, 2026. On September 18, 1944, the B-24H Liberator nicknamed "Rum Runner" was shot down by flak over the Netherlands during Operation Market Garden as it was delivering much-needed supplies to U.S. and British paratroopers. As the United States marks 250 years of independence, Operation Market Garden commemorations offer a living example of the long relationship between Americans and the Dutch. From Dutch trade and support during the American Revolution, symbolized by the First Salute at St. Eustatius in 1776, to American and Allied forces fighting together in the Netherlands in 1944, that history continues today through communities that preserve the memory of the those who served and through and enduring U.S.-Dutch partnership.
