Leading the way: 1st Lt. Richard McDermott with the 680th Engineer Company, assigned to Joint Task Force-Southern Border (JTF-SB) in support of Operation Ardent Vanguard, oversees familiarization training on custom shallow-marsh boats in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas, on Sep. 15, 2026. These boats allow for better navigation of tight, shallow waterways along the Rio Grande River to support patrol operations. U.S. Northern Command works side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
