U.S. Soldiers with 62nd Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, assigned to Joint Task Force-Southern Border in support of Operation Ardent Vanguard, place concertina wire along the southern border barrier near Santa Teresa, New Mexico, Sept. 9, 2026. This barrier reinforcement operation serves to install additional obstacles along the southern barrier and deter suspected illegal entry into the United States. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
