About this video
LTC Mark A. Viney, Director of the US Army Heritage and Education Center, analyzes Operation Joint Endeavor—NATO's first-ever ground operation and the largest military effort in Europe since World War II. Using the deployment of the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry ("Quarterhorse") into Bosnia in December 1995 as a case study, LTC Viney explores how this unit maintained peace amidst mountainous terrain, land mines, and terrorist threats. He illustrates how these early post-Cold War stability operations shaped the tactical leadership of officers who later commanded forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
